Shop Cheapest Online Ernani This is simply the most moving performance of this opera I've heard in years. It is far from perfect. None of the singers is in freshest voice. The baritone is a liability, most of the time; the ensemble, well, let's just say they don't necessarily enter into or depart from their phrases with whiplash precision. Rhythm on the whole doesn't seem at the forefront of conductor Bruno Campanello's concerns. And yet.... The cuts are spare-- Ernani's and Elvira's cabalettas each lose a verse in the first act, but we get Silva's, for a change, and the repeat of the big phrase in the final trio! Merciful Mama! This makes it unique, as far as I know, in live recordings of Ernani. Campanello is an uncannily sensitive accompanist, and takes his own sweet time with the thing to boot. Fabio Armiliato simply displays greater artistry and more actual voice than at the Met years before. Not the most grateful voice, maybe, but I was always grateful for the singing. Daniela Dessi was competing solely with her own Nuova Era performance sixteen years prior, and here wins, in both detail and grandeur. A top tier artist, and much missed. If this Ernani isn't the most propulsive one on the books, it is the most fully savored, and that earns it a place in any Verdian's collection..The 1950s Cetra recordings feature rough-and-ready vocalism, often from singerswho are over the hill, but this one is really excellent. Tenor Gino Penno is forgottennow, but he was one of the great tenor voices in his day, and if Mancini is shrill, shehas the Verdian dramatic style down cold. Taddei is Taddei: great singer, great actor, the very, very best. The bass, Giacomo Vaghi, is very much inthe style and very good at what he does. There are other Ernani recordings withmore glamorous voices, but they don't surge wonderfully along as this one does.Unfortunately, the booklet has notes but no libretto. Still, this is a superb performanceat a very low price. I bought this CD based on the positive reviews. I already owned the recording with Price and Bergonzi and MacNeil and Tozzi, but I am not a fan of Bergonzi so I took a chance on it. Unfortunately, the sound of this recording is so poor that it makes me wish I had not wasted my money. I have several live recordings in my collection, but this one is the worst. Not only does it sound like it was made with a cheap tape recorder sitting in the audience, the recorded level is so low that I had to turn the volume up more than I would like for the safety of my receiver. This remarkable CD could be improved only by a video performance with two of the greatest singing/actors in opera: Raina Kabaivanska and Placido Domingo! In my personal library of opera performances, I have over 500 different titles, and this recording of "Ernani" rates among the top 20% in excellence. The re-mastering is superbly done, the orchestra as well as supporting cast are outstanding. "Ernani" is not one of Verdi's most often parformed operas, but that does not decrease its value to the true lover of opera. Even with no camera present to record the actress, when La Kabavainska sings "Ernani, Ernani!" the listener cannot help but respond to the depths of emotion of this tragic heroine. No listener will be disappointed as these two greatest of the great artists, Domingo and Kabaivanska, elevate Verdi's beautiful opera to new heights of beauty. Five stars are not enough for this magnificent performance! You must have this one!The great joy of this was the opportunity to hear Montserrat Caballé as Elvira,in 1969, with the fine conductor,Gavazzeni. Previdi sounded slightly less confident in Ernani's first aria, 'Mercé diletti amici', than in his later scenes The impressive cast is rounded out by Boris Christoff as the murderous Da Silva and Peter Glossop as the elegant Don Carlo. The cuts bother me terribly. We are cheated of the full experience of a perfectly constructed work. Apparently the opera had to fit into the radio broadcast timetable. To do that to Verdi is a bit like cutting off body parts so one can fit into a bed. One of the major satisfactions of the La Scala DVD with Domingo,Freni, Bruson, and Giaurov is the exciting perfection of Muti conducting the complete score" ". But hearing Caballé in this performance is a joy. A plus: there's a libretto. The sound is fine, and the orchestra plays well enough, given the indifferent conducting, but this is the sort of performance that exemplifies "routine." The usual cuts are taken, most ruinously in the act one finale and the final trio. Shicoff sounds worn out, Crider is wayward of pitch and rhythm, leaving Alvarez to claim the evening, handily. Even earliest Verdi calls for ample rubato; the music here is simply too beautiful to be dashed off thus. There may be worse "Ernani"s out there, but, at this price, surely none more disappointing. Orfeo should have left this dog in the dungeon. hfs A Verdi opera, conducted by Previtali and having Taddei in the cast is recommendation enough. As it turns out the rest of the cast is well worth listening to also. Penno and Mancini turn in fine performances. Perhaps it lacks the polish of the studio, but it has the thrill of a live performance--something we're getting more of these days on recordings.great music amp; performers CDs Vinyl => Opera Classical Vocal => Operettas Editorial Reviews Product Description The part of Ernani is heavy and baritonal. Together with Otello, it suited Del Monaco more than other Verdi roles. His pathos in the death scene is affecting. Bastianini sings with fewer explosive accentuations and is more lyric than usual, so that his voice is actually sweet. Christoff also is in fresher voice than later in his career and is suitably implacable. Cerquetti is sensual in her scena, soars above the others in ensembles and oozes feeling in the fourth act.. One thinks of Ernani as an "oom-pah-pah" opera. Mitropoulos emphasizes melodic elements in the orchestration and introduces considerable ebb and flow of tempo, so that the score becomes more romantic. Yet the result has fabulous spirit and is often hair-raising. Review "A superb cast, with four main principals of true Verdian stature, graces this recording in sound that's remarkably good ..." -- "i"Alan Blyth, Gramophone"Here are four big, handsome voices at full stretch, urged on by an estimable conductor having one of his good days." -- "i"Tully Potter, Classic Record Collector"a cast to die for: Del Monaco, Bastianini, Christoff, plus the much less familiar Anita Cerquetti, ... the baton of Mitropoulos." -- "i"Jerome R. Sehulster, The Advocate [Connecticut]The [BCS] version ... is the one I give to people when I want them to know what I sounded like. -- "i"Anita Cerquetti, Rome, ItalyThe sound quality ... is beautiful, and the performance is superb. Listening to it makes it easier to bear this world. -- "i"Franca Christoff [Boris Christoff's widow], Accademia Boris Christoff, Rome, Italy Online Cheap Sale Clearance Happy Halloween Saying with the famous Hockey Mask T-Shirt Discount Shop we've got a dedicated customer support team ready and waiting to deal with any of your issues, Happy Halloween Saying with the famous Hockey Mask T-Shirt
